Instructor Qualifications (ADI/PDI)

Green badge = qualified ADI, pink badge = trainee PDI

Green badge
Fully qualified ADI
Pink badge
Trainee PDI, supervised
DVSA graded
ADIs assessed via Standards Check

Pros

  • Badge colour is a quick, verifiable way to check an instructor is legally entitled to charge for lessons
  • PDIs are supervised trainees and often charge less, while still being a legitimate legal route to qualified teaching

Cons

  • A pink-badge PDI has less teaching experience than a green-badge ADI by definition
  • Grading isn’t always visibly displayed, so it may need asking about directly

About Instructor Qualifications (ADI/PDI)

Anyone charging money for driving lessons in the UK must legally be either a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) on the official DVSA register, or a supervised trainee known as a PDI (Provisional Driving Instructor) working under a trainee licence. The two are easy to tell apart at a glance: ADIs display a green badge in the car windscreen, while PDIs display a pink badge. ADIs are also graded by the DVSA on a scale from their periodic Standards Check assessment. Checking badge colour (and, where relevant, grade) before booking is the direct equivalent of checking a tradesperson’s professional registration in other regulated services — it’s a genuine, verifiable trust signal, not just a nice-to-have.

Frequently asked questions

Is it actually illegal to pay someone without a badge for lessons?

Yes — charging for driving instruction without being on the DVSA ADI register or holding a valid PDI trainee licence is a legal offence in the UK, which is exactly why checking badge colour before booking matters.

Are you a driving school yourselves?

No — Compare Driving Instructors is an independent comparison and information service. We always recommend checking an instructor’s DVSA ADI registration and badge colour directly before booking any lessons.

Is all the pricing on this site guaranteed?

No — costs mentioned are typical ranges reported by trade sources, not fixed quotes. Lesson prices vary by region, instructor experience and lesson length, so always confirm current pricing directly with an instructor.

What happens after I request information?

We review your request and look for a driving instructor who covers your area. If we can match you, they or we will contact you. There is no obligation to go ahead, and we cannot guarantee a response in every area.
