Theory Test & Hazard Perception Preparation

Multiple choice + hazard perception clips, pass mark 43/50 + 44/75

50 questions
Multiple choice, need 43 to pass
14 clips
Hazard perception, need 44/75
Both required
Must pass both sections together

Pros

  • Official DVSA practice materials and question banks are widely and cheaply available
  • Preparing properly reduces the real cost/time hit of having to resit

Cons

  • Both sections must be passed together — a strong multiple-choice score doesn’t offset a weak hazard perception score
  • Theory pass certificates expire after 2 years, so timing your practical test matters

About Theory Test & Hazard Perception Preparation

You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test. It has two parts in one sitting: a multiple-choice section (50 questions drawn from the official DVSA question bank, covering the Highway Code, road signs and safe driving practice — you need 43 correct to pass), and a hazard perception section (14 video clips of everyday road scenes, each with at least one developing hazard you click as soon as you spot it — scored out of 75, with 44 needed to pass). Both sections must be passed on the same attempt; passing only one means resitting the whole test.

Frequently asked questions

How long is my theory test pass valid for?

Two years from the date you pass — if you haven’t also passed your practical test within that window, you’ll need to sit and pass the theory test again before you can book a further practical.

Are you a driving school yourselves?

No — Compare Driving Instructors is an independent comparison and information service. We always recommend checking an instructor’s DVSA ADI registration and badge colour directly before booking any lessons.

Is all the pricing on this site guaranteed?

No — costs mentioned are typical ranges reported by trade sources, not fixed quotes. Lesson prices vary by region, instructor experience and lesson length, so always confirm current pricing directly with an instructor.

What happens after I request information?

We review your request and look for a driving instructor who covers your area. If we can match you, they or we will contact you. There is no obligation to go ahead, and we cannot guarantee a response in every area.
