Driving lesson costs in the UK (2026): lessons, tests and licence fees

Quick answer: most driving lessons in Great Britain cost £36 to £40 an hour. That was the most common price in DVSA’s October 2025 survey of instructors, charged by half of them, and the RAC’s 2026 guide gives a working range of £35 to £50. On top of lessons you pay fixed fees: £34 for a provisional licence online, £23 for the theory test and £62 for a weekday practical test.

How lesson prices have changed

DVSA has asked instructors what they charge in several surveys, grouping answers into three bands. The shift since 2022 is large:

In October 2025 the full spread was: £25 or less 0.4%, £26 to £30 2.0%, £31 to £35 18.2%, £36 to £40 50.3%, £41 to £45 22.5%, £46 to £50 5.0% and £51 or more 1.6%. The survey had 3,448 responses, about 8% of the 43,334 ADIs registered at the end of September 2025.

Lesson prices by region

The same survey breaks prices down by region. It is ordered by the share of instructors charging £41 or more. London is not the most expensive region on this measure; the South West is.

What a full course of lessons costs

The RAC’s 2026 guide says learners typically need around 45 hours of lessons plus about 22 hours of private practice. At the most common price of £36 to £40, 45 hours works out at £1,620 to £1,800 before any test fees; at the RAC’s £50 upper figure it is £2,250. Your own total depends on how quickly you learn, whether you practise privately, and whether you pass first time.

What changes the price

  • Lesson length. Compare the hourly rate. A 90-minute or two-hour lesson often looks expensive until you divide it out.
  • Block bookings. Many instructors discount blocks of 10 hours. Check what happens to unused hours before you pay: see block booking lessons.
  • Automatic or manual. Some instructors charge more for automatic lessons. An automatic test gives an automatic-only licence.
  • Intensive courses. These bundle many hours into days or weeks and are usually priced as a package. Check whether the test fee and a test slot are included, and how the slot will be booked.
  • Where you live. The regional table above shows real differences, and busy areas can have waiting lists for instructors.
